Numbers and Operation in Mathmatics
addition a+b sum: a plus bsubtraction a-b difference: a less bmultiplication a.b, (a).b,
a.(b), (a).(b) product: a time bdivision a/b quotient: a divide bIn
algebra, we generally avoid to use the multiplication sign “ ×” and the
division sign “÷”.We must
note that when two expression are placed next to each other without an
operation symbol, as in ab, or in parentheses as in (a)(b) , these expressions
are called factors, are to be multiplied. The four
operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are called binary
operations.
1:The
sum of 4 and 5 equals 9.In symbol, this statement is written as 4+5=9.
we use equal sign to convey the
idea that one expression is equivalent to another.
