What
is Grammar?
Grammar is the study of how words and their
component parts combine to form sentences. Simply put, grammar is the system of
a language.
Peoples sometimes describe grammar as the ‘rule’, of
a language. Strictly speaking, language has no rules as such. If we use the
term ‘rules’, we suggest that somebody created the rules first and then spoke
the language. But language did not start that way. Language started when people
made sounds which evolved into words, phrase and sentences. No commonly-spoken
language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call grammar is
simply a reflection of a language at a given time.
Why
learn Grammar?
The word grammar, generally, doesn’t evoke happy
feelings in people. At the mention of a word ‘grammar’ people ask, “Do we need
to study grammar to learn a language?”
No, not really! As children we start speaking before
we know what grammar is. People in different parts of the world speak their
own, native language without having studied its grammar.
Words:
When a baby attempts to speak, she begins with
sounds. These sounds gradually turn into little words like da,ma,dada and nana. As
we grow up, we pick up more and more words. Bus,home, office, food, travel, talk, sing, play are some of the words we
use all the time.
Words help to communicate with each other. The more
words you know, the better you speak or write. Can you imagine a world where
there are no words? Words are the building blocks of a language.
